Found more than 25 years ago, Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center aims to promote and preserve the culture of ancient northern kingdom, Lanna. At Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center, you will enjoy a pleasant evening enjoying stage performances and hill tribes shows while having an exotic Khantoke dinner of typical Northern Thai cuisines.
Guests will be comfortably seated on floor cushions and are entertained by beautiful Thai dancers and take pleasure in genuine hill-tribe performances at the Hill-tribe Theater. For a very modest fee, each table gets a typical Northern Thai selection that includes such delicious dishes as fried pumpkin, Nam Prik Ong and Kaeng Han Le, all accompanied by sticky rice. For special requests, such as vegetarian food, be sure to call in advance.
A three-hour experience starts with traditional performances to whet your appetite. The show begins with a classical orchestra accompanies troupes of dancers in gorgeous costumes who mesmerize you with their graceful movements. These are absolutely authentic Northern Thailand dances, quite distinct from those performed in Bangkok and Ayutthaya. They are rooted in the region's history, literature and ways of life.
While some, like the Fingernail Dance, that is usually performed only on special occasions such as a state visit, are slow, stately and exquisitely graceful, others such as the solo Sword Dance has a flashing, ferocious beauty. Performances such as the Magic Fowls Dance, meanwhile, are taken from local folklore and literature while a fourth genre that includes the Silk Reeling Dance depicts various aspects of daily village life.
The final dance is the Ramwong, or Circle Dance. This is a typical Thai folk dance that was very popular some 60 or 70 years ago. After a few introductory rounds, guests are welcome to join the dancing circle with the dancers.
Other than that, Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center also offers a refreshing change of pace. You can stroll along another part of the Center for hill tribe show. The handicrafts, garments and musical instruments of the various tribes are displayed on stalls along the way should you wish to buy a memento of your visit.
