The Bor Sang Umbrella Village is becoming one of the most popular Chiang Mai Tourist Attractions for viewing umbrellas being made. It was said that the villagers derived the knowledge of umbrella making form Thai Buddhist monk who learned the practice on a pilgrimage to Burma.
At first making umbrellas was just a hobby for the villagers to do after the annual rice crop, which helped supplement the villagers’ earnings, but as time passed by the production of Saa-paper umbrellas slowly prospered, this then prompted villagers to establish a handicraft cooperative in 1941, which has continued the expansion of production & sales of the exquisitely hand-painted parasols right up today.
Visitors to Bor Sang will see literally hundreds of designs and sizes of umbrellas ranging from the miniature to the gigantic. Also, visitors can closely watch the umbrellas being made, then choose one from the variety of beautiful and colorful designs as your souvenir.
The best time to visit the village is during the third week of January. This is the time when Bor Sang Umbrella Village holds its annual Bor Sang Umbrella Festival. During the annual event, Bor Sang Umbrella Village will be brightly decorated.
The highlights every year are to walk down the streets that are completely illuminated by lanterns, looking into each wooden house,to see hundreds of umbrellas hung from the rafters and roof beams. Craft shops and stores line on both sides of the street to display their items including the colorful umbrellas and traditional lanterns. Pickup trucks are also covered with brightly colored parasols and fans, and the locals dress up in their finest traditional outfits to join in the parade. You can also engage in a round of healthy bargaining with the shop owners.
